English for Academic Purposes Summer Course
Key words: Writing papers; Oral Presentation; Listening; Reading
In this intensive 4-week summer course, students will be prepared for academic use of English needed for participation in an English taught study programme. Attention will be paid to all four skills, namely, Writing (research report, essay), Listening (note taking) Reading (academic reading skills and vocabulary development) and speaking (arguing your point, oral presentation). The aim of the course is to improve you linguistic abilities and give you more confidence to be successful in your academic career in English. (Entry level: CEF B2, IELTS Band Score 5.5, TOEFL Score 525 (220/90) Dutch Secondary School Diploma (VWO + HAVO), or a Placement Test)

The course aims to improve students’ writing (papers/letters) and speaking (including a presentation) Attention will also be paid to grammar, vocabulary, and academic writing conventions. English: Exercises in Creative Writing offered in the spring semester only
Key words: Writing short stories
The aim of the course is to improve the participants’ English by giving students the opportunity to write short fictions in a workshop setting. In order to learn the styles and conventions needed for fiction writing, students are provided with selected readings; in addition, these issues are dealt with at length in the lectures. (Entry Level: CEF B2+/C1, 6 years of English at VWO, or similar level)

English for IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

This course is designed for students wishing to study abroad or participate in an English Language Master’s. All four skills will be developed (listening, speaking, reading & writing) and students will be trained to sit for the IELTS exam (external test). (Band score 6.5-7) (Entry Level: CEF B2, 6 years of English at VWO, or similar level)

English Advanced (Cambridge Proficiency level)
Key words: High level: Writing; Listening; Speaking; Reading
This course is designed for students whose level of English is very high. The course prepares students for a year abroad or an English taught Master’s or Research Master. All four skills will be developed with special attentions being paid to vocabulary and idiomatic expression. (Entry requirement: Pass for any of the other courses offered by the Language Centre, CEF C1+, Cambridge Advanced Certificate, IELTS Band Score 7.5, TOEFL score 575, or a Placement Test)

English Oral Skills
Key words: Speaking; Oral Presentations; Pronunciation
The emphasis of this course is on English speaking skills and presentation skills in English. Attention is paid to a variety of aspects of pronunciation (phonetic symbols, predictable pronunciations, and stress and intonation) and to listening skills (note taking, summarizing, listening for information). (Entry level: CEF B2, 6 years of English at VWO, or similar level)

English Business Communication
Key words: Professional skills
The objective of this course is to develop students’ communication skills in a professional (business) setting. Practical training will be given in presentations, negotiations, and job interviews and attention will be paid to the language used in these situations. The course also deals with business correspondence (letter writing, CV, email etc.). (Entry Level: CEF B2+, 6 years of English at VWO, or similar level)

English for Public Speaking offered in the spring semester only
Key words: Language and techniques of interviews, meetings, speeches, and presentations; Pronunciation
The objective of this course is to train students to speak in English in more formal settings. Attention is paid to language issues and techniques involved in the different forms of public speaking. We will also focus on improving different aspects of pronunciation (individual sounds, word stress, intonation, etc.). (Entry Level: CEF B2, 6 years of English at VWO, or similar level)

English for ILEC (International Legal English Certificate)

Entry Requirements: students with a legal background (level requirements see below) This course will focus on the four language skills which constitute the ILEC exam: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. These skills will be practised in relation to several different fields of law, such as company law, employment law, and competition law. The language points addressed in this course are: legal vocabulary, legal correspondence, discussions, understanding legal texts, legal style issues, etc. (Entry level: Pass for any of the other courses offered by the Language Centre, CEF B2+ - C1+, IELTS Band Score 7, TOEFL score 550, or a Placement Test)
